Welcome to NBB

Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology (NBB) is an inter-departmental undergrad program offering a Bachelor of Science and combining the expertise, enthusiasm, and commitment of a large, diverse group of faculty from many departments. Currently NBB’s faculty of 78 represent 52 members of the College of Arts & Sciences recruited from NBB, Anthropology, Biology, Psychology as well as Chemistry, Economics, English, Environmental Studies, Philosophy and Women’s Studies. NBB faculty also include 26 members from outside the College, coming from Oxford College, Rollins School of Public Health, Yerkes National Primate Research Center, and School of Medicine departments of Cell Biology, Emergency Medicine, Neurology, Ophthalmology and Psychiatry .

The NBB major combines behavioral biology with the study of how the nervous system controls body functions and cognition. Using the concepts of evolution as a unifying theme, the major represents a unique interdisciplinary synthesis of the fields of Neuroscience and Behavior and provides a breadth and focus not found in traditional Biology, Psychology, Biopsychology, Neuroscience, or Anthropology programs.

"These traditional disciplines ask similar questions about brain and behavior, but often from different points of view," says Paul Lennard, director of the NBB program. "The interdisciplinary nature of NBB degree brings new insights to our students."

The NBB faculty includes 25 members who have been designated Emory Distinguished Professors by the Office of the Provost and 14 winners of the Emory Williams Teaching Award, Emory University’s highest award for excellence in teaching. NBB has become one of the “signature” programs of Emory College and has over 600 majors and approximately 150 students each year graduate with a Bachelor of Science.
