Figure 8.3. Brain Dissection Steps. A. After removing the gut and other extra tissue from around the brain, turn it upside down and pin it flat with the pedal nerves facing up.
B. Find the aorta where it protrudes into the circumesophageal ring. Cut through the aorta and the ganglia. The pedal nerves should face up before cutting. It is usually easier to cut from the inside of the ring towards the posterior end of the ganglion. C. After the aorta is cut, some nerves and ganglion lobes will be sticking up. Remove these without cutting too deeply. Turn the brain over again and pin it out tightly. The pedal ganglia are now ready to be desheathed (ask your instructor for help).
